Social Networking in WordPress through BuddyPress

Monday, March 8th, 2010

Ever wish to create a social networking website out of WordPress? Previously, this was not possible as there weren’t any plugins created for this sole purpose. However, the time has come for BuddyPress to get noticed. BuddyPress creates a whole new layer of social networking for WordPress.

Previously, BuddyPress was limited only to those using WordPress MU (Multi-User). However, the recent update to BuddyPress 1.2 reveals a number of new improvements including the compatibility of BuddyPress with the normal version of WordPress instead of WordPress MU. This may be because once WordPress 3.0 is published, there will no longer be WordPress MU as everything is integrated to WordPress 3.0.

BuddyPress has an extend page of its own much like WordPress as well. There are a lot of plugins available on its website for the users to choose from. However, most of these themes are still below version 1.0 which means that they are most probably still in the developing stage. Not to worry however as most of these plugins are stable enough to work properly with BuddyPress.

There aren’t many themes available for BuddyPress so far but the new version of BuddyPress allows it to integrate seamlessly through most of the WordPress themes. However, should the user wishes to check on themes that are meant for BuddyPress, then he or she should check out WPMU Dev.

This is particularly handy as it will increase interactivity amongst users. A demo version of the plugin is also available here.

Like many other social networking sites, BuddyPress allow users to add “friends” or other users that are in the blogging network. In addition to that, the plugin also allows the creation of Groups on which users may join. In fact, it has most of the features available to other dedicated social networking site such as Facebook, Myspace, Friendster and many others.

There are many plugins as well as themes for this particular WordPressMU extension. This allows further modification made to the site and potentially makes it even better as well. Site owners may also get paid plugins as well as themes at premium sites such as WPMUDev.
